Student Internship Stories: Jaclyn Meyer (CAS’25)

Jaclyn Meyer participated in her internship in the summer of 2023 at Rising Up Together in Utah.

How did you learn about this internship opportunity? What career resources from BU or elsewhere did you use during the application and interview process?
I learned about it from Handshake.

Why did you choose to apply for this particular internship?
I liked the ability to focus on things affecting the youth

What were your job responsibilities as an intern?
As the Curriculum Director, I lead other interns in the curriculum team. I looked at the details of the curriculum and was able to make it the best it could be. I also was able to help make the media files look professional and get them ready to give out to interested schools. I also looked over the Clinical Studies team and helped make sure the things we are teaching are backed by research

What was the most rewarding part of your internship?
The most rewarding part is getting to see everything come together and hearing how soon this program is going to be in school!

What was the most challenging part of your internship?
The most challenging part was the beginning when I was unsure if I could be an effective leader for my teams.

What skills, technical or soft, did you develop during your internship?
I learned how to lead weekly meetings in an effective way that also supported my teams in the best way I could.

What was the most memorable moment of your experience?
The weekly directors’ meetings were the most memorable moments. Everyone was so supportive and gave advice on how to better lead the teams. We were able to share things we were doing within our teams but also got to hear about what people were doing outside the internship!

What is the biggest takeaway from your internship experience?
My biggest takeaway is that public health is complex, and many issues have so many different aspects that need to be taken into consideration, and it’s not always the most obvious thing. My other biggest takeaway is that being a leader isn’t just about allocating tasks but also giving and getting advice from your team

What advice would you give to another student about making the most of an internship, job, or other career-related experience?
First is to just go for it; even if you think you might not get the position you should still apply, you never know what could happen! Secondly, make the most of it! Get to know your coworkers, this will help with networking!
