What is a Career Mentor and How to Find One

Deb Jancourtz

A career mentor can provide firsthand knowledge into the realities of a chosen field. Textbooks and classes are important but learning from someone with ‘real-world’ experience is the best! A career mentor is someone who has relevant expertise or knowledge of the field you are pursuing.   A mentor shares anecdotes, practical lessons, advice, feedback, and industry trends that textbooks simply can’t capture.  They have lived the career path you may be considering, and they can give you a better understanding of what to expect, helping you to prepare for your future more effectively.

To find a suitable career mentor, start by identifying your goals and interests. Seek mentors within your desired industry or field, through personal connections like professors, coaches, relatives, family friends, networking events, or online platforms.  Approach potential mentors by showing enthusiasm and a genuine desire to learn from their experience.

Our online platform, BU Connects, is designed exclusively for Boston University students, alumni, faculty, and staff. It brings Terriers together for personal and professional networking on a global scale. Using the built-in functionality, you can easily connect with alumni and others to find a mentor, conduct informational interviews and more. Once you make an account on BU Connects, go to Mentoring on the left-hand side of the home page to find a list of people by their professional field who are willing to mentor you. They will also have a ‘green badge’ next to their name to show their availability.

A career mentor may offer insights, connections, and encouragement that pave the way to a fulfilling internship, job or career. Having a mentor can help you build your professional network. They can connect you with other professionals in your field as you progress through BU and begin your career.
