Employer Perspective: Big Brothers Big Sisters of Eastern Massachusetts

By: Haylee Morgan, Community Engagement Coordinator

Please tell us a little about your organization:
Big Brothers Big Sisters is looking for BU students to mentor a youth from the Boston area! You will be paired with a child between the ages of 7-12 who you will mentor while doing fun activities together on BU’s campus or you will have the option to visit your little at their school! You’ll make a big impact by helping your “Little” build confidence and social and emotional competence while gaining leadership skills and development to add to your resume!

Why does your organization recruit at BU?
We want to give BU students the opportunity to become a mentor to a young person in Boston area so they can gain leadership skills, build personal development and get involved with the community around them! We want to give BU students the opportunity to give back and make a BIG difference in someones life.

What are the characteristics of a successful intern or employee at your organization?
The most important thing needed to be a successful Big is to be committed. Just the simple act of showing up for your little and meeting up with them in person can change their life. The most important thing Bigs can provide to them is their time.

What are some of the strengths and weaknesses you see from BU applicants to your organization?
We often see students are unsure of the time commitment to our program or being afraid of becoming a mentor because they do not feel qualified. Anyone can become a mentor, all it takes is the commitment to show up. Big Brothers Big Sisters also provides you with a match support coordinator who you can lean on for any questions or help you might need. We know college students have busy schedules, which is why we created this program specifically to work with BU students and make sure the time commitment is doable!

What would you recommend a student learn now to ensure long-term success in your field?
In the non-profit field, it is extremely valuable for students to learn the importance of getting involved in local communities and learn how powerful people can be when they work together and uplift each other.

Are there upcoming events or deadlines for applying to your organization students should know about?
