PhD and Grad Students: What the CCD Can Do for You

The Center for Career Development (CCD) is available to PhD and graduate students and can help with specific concerns that you may have in your time here. Some of the ways we can help are:

  • Developing your job search strategy: Whether you are planning to pursue an academic job, a post-doc position, or plan to transition to industry/non-academic job, we can help you narrow your focus, plan your search strategy, and be a sounding board to discuss any tough decisions or questions around your search. Career counselors are impartial when it comes to your career decisions so if you need to have a conversation with someone outside of your family, friends, or department, about your career decisions, we are a great resource.
  • Understanding the non-academic job market: Counselors at the CCD can work with you identify your transferable skills if you are deciding to pursue a non-academic pathway. We can help you explore options beyond academia and to research niche markets that will value your skills and degree. We will also help you communicate your value to prospective employers.
  • Developing your job search materials: If you are embarking on your academic job search, in addition to your faculty mentors and department, we can be another set of eyes on your CV. We can also review cover letters and teaching statements in career counseling appointments. If you plan to move to industry, we can help you convert your CV to a shorter resume appropriate for non-academic jobs.
  • Providing resources and connections: The CCD also has a number of resources that can be helpful to you and we can help you connect to other offices on campus for assistance, we can help connect you to other BU alumni, and we can help connect you with employers interested in BU talent. As a BU student, you have access to Handshake, the CCD hub for connecting with job postings, making appointments, seeing and RSVPing to employer events and fairs, and accessing subscription resources like Vault, VMock, and Big Interview.

You don’t need a specific reason or agenda to come and visit with us. If you need help or want to learn more, sign up for an appointment. We hope to meet you soon!
