The CCD visited Northwestern Mutual, one of the nation’s leading insurance firms. You may have heard of them before, but did you know they had one of the most unique and exciting internship programs out there?
“We have the number 1 training program in the financial services industry,” said Courtney Pollard, Campus Recruiter. “We accept students from all majors, and for around one-third of our interns, the program is the first step to a full-time job.”
Founded in 1859, Northwestern Mutual was named one of the “World’s Most Admired Companies” in its industry according to FORTUNE magazine’s annual survey, published January 2019. Northwestern Mutual was also ranked #111 in the 2019 FORTUNE 500 survey.
“Students begin our internship program after a competitive hiring process with indepth training that provides licensing for students to talk about finance,” Pollard said. “During the internship, we expect students to make their own calls and do their own outreach, which then comprises their initial book of business if they are brought on full-time.”
Internships at Northwestern Mutual are paid the same commission rate as full-time employment, plus a weekly stipend. The average intern makes $7,000 over the course of their internship, Pollard said.
“Our company culture is also a lot of fun for interns. We go to sporting events, have outings like bowling every other Thursday, and give back to the community through things like volunteering with the cancer charity Alex’s Lemonade Stand,” Pollard said. “Students get out of the internship some hands-on experience when they can truly test-drive an exciting career. They also learn a lot of transferrable skills and have opportunities for networking.”
Approximately 12% of the students who apply for the Northwestern Mutual internship program are accepted. Interns are onboarded on a rolling basis.
