Financial Intern

Tell us about your work experience. What were your responsibilities?

My responsibilities were basically analyzing annual reports and doing research for different companies in the furniture industry. I completed a professional industry research report for IKEA in a team of three. Besides analyzing industries, I also learned how to build basic financial model using Excel and completed one for MLILY (a Chinese company).

How did you get the position? What resources at BU or elsewhere did you use?

Since I was just a freshmen at that time, I got that position from my father’s network.

What is one challenge that you encountered during your summer experience and how did you manage it?

I could not really understand financial statements when I was asked to analyze the annual report. I read books that my father recommended me to learn the components of financial statements and searched on the internet for more information. When I had questions that have no answers on the internet, I would ask my supervisors to search for solutions. I learned a lot from this process.

What was the best thing about the experience? What was the worst?

The best thing is that I finally completed a report and financial model by myself, which gave me a sense of achievement. And I also got to make some really good friends.

What was the most memorable moment of your experience?

The most memorable moments were probably the lunch time chats with my supervisor and other colleagues I had during my internship. They really provided me with a guide to my future career.

What advice would you give to another student about making the most of an internship or job experience?

Don’t be shy; ask questions! No one knows everything and your supervisor definitely wants to teach you and help you.
