CCD: Tell us about your internship experience. What were your responsibilities?

Erostin: I collaborated with a team of eight in which we were tasked with designing and programming a web application that provides an interface to access medical records from cloud storage.

CCD: What was the best thing about the experience? What was the worst?

Erostin: The best thing was the new knowledge I gained during my internship. I learned a whole new programming language, used coding tools that I had never used before, and I was engaged in a Scrum Agile environment which is a methodology that many companies are adopting in their workplaces. The worst thing, I would say, was that we had to depend on a team that was located overseas to provide us with the tools and documentation needed and that often took longer than necessary.

CCD: What surprised you about your summer experience?

Erostin: Although we were interns, we were treated as full-time employees. We were given brand new laptops, many students were living in Optum housing for free, and we were often provided with free lunches as well as T-Passes.

CCD: What was the most memorable moment of your summer experience?

Erostin: The most memorable moment was the final Shark Tank style presentation we did as a team in front of high-up executives in the company. After we presented on what we had worked on throughout the eleven weeks of the internship, they expressed their praise for our work and gave the approval to push our app into production, and it will soon be used by actual Optum clients.
