Did you know that many employers recruit BU students during the academic year? It’s true. On-campus employer visits and virtual employer info sessions are a great resource you don’t want to miss. Check Handshake regularly—as well as the Center for Career Development’s events calendar—for all upcoming employer events.
Perhaps you think that this is something that does not apply to you. You are just beginning your academic career and will not be looking for a job for a few years or you are not sure what you want to do.
Whether you are just starting out or are well into your search for a full-time position after you graduate, engaging with employers as a student has some wonderful benefits.
Employers regularly engage BU students for information sessions, meet and greets, office hours, as well as for resume reviews and mock interviews. Information sessions are presentations where employers share details about their organization and opportunities available. It’s a great opportunity to learn more about the company, industry, and career field. You may discover that the organization or industry is just what you have been looking for or you may realize that maybe it is not something that interests you. Either way, you are gaining knowledge that will help your career development.
In addition to information sessions, employers will often hold office hours or conduct a meet and greet. These are less formal and will give you a unique opportunity to speak one on one with an employer. You can ask questions about their organization/industry. You can also ask career-related questions. It is a great way to engage with employers in a more relaxed and less intimidating way.
Employers may also hold resume reviews and mock interviews. This is an excellent chance to receive tips and advice from an employer’s perspective. You can learn what employers are looking for on resumes and what advice they have for refining your interviewing skills. It is also a great opportunity to get to know the employer on an individual basis.
Employer on-campus visits and virtual events are a great way to explore different industries and career fields. You do not have to know exactly what you want to do in order attend any of the events. Pick a variety of different employers and events to attend. The information you gain will be a great asset to help you determine what you do and do not like.
Employers are recruiting with us because they are eager to meet and learn more about BU students. Be sure to take advantage of all the opportunities available to you!
