When you think of BU’s new career resource site, Handshake, you might first think of the thousands of internship and job postings available to BU students. But there’s a lot more to Handshake than internships and jobs!
Here are a few insider tips for getting the most out of your time on Handshake.
Click EVENTS on the left-hand navigation bar. You will see a list of upcoming events. Events include employer information sessions, workshops (Resumes 101, Cover Letters 101, Career Directions, etc.), programs, and more.
To narrow your search, click on “Find some events” under Your Upcoming Events, which is located on the top left of the Events page. You can then filter by event type, date, key word, etc.).
You can also set up saved searches. To set up a saved search, fill out your preference and then click on the + sign next to saved search button. Name your search and then click save. Your search will now appear when you click on saved searches. You can set up as many as you like.
Click on the title of the event to see details of event and to RSVP. Click “Join Event” to RSVP for the event, which will be added to your Handshake calendar and will send you reminders.
Click on FAIRS on the left-hand navigation bar. Click on the title of the fair to view employers and to RSVP. Click Join Event to RSVP.
Click View Employers to view a list of employers attending the fair. Search attending employers by employment type, major, etc. Click Other to search employers who accept all majors and employers with optional US Authorization. Click MORE below the employer name to view further details.
Career Counseling Appointments
Would you like to discuss a career-related issue with career counselor? Career appointments can be made through Handshake by clicking on Appointments on the left-hand navigation bar and then clicking Schedule A New Appointment. All appointments must be made at least 24 hours in advance.
Have an interview coming up that you need practice with? Check out Big Interview, a mock interview tool accessible through Handshake. Click on Resources on your left-hand navigation bar and then click on Big Interview and follow the instructions.
Interested in working or interning abroad? Check out GoinGlobal, which is accessible through the Resources (on left-hand navigation bar) section of Handshake. Going Global is a great resource to research organizations abroad. The country guides provide you access to culture, visa, and interview advice for a variety of countries.
