CCD: Tell us about the internship experience. What were your responsibilities?
Joshua: I am involved in the BU chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers. I attended a career fair at one of the professional development conferences that they host annually. EMC was in attendance and I thought that their recruiters were very down to earth and inspiring. I applied through the conference, interviewed the next week, and was hired within 2 weeks. I worked as a web application developer so I assisted the UX/UI team in developing and releasing the eCDM Skyline Application. I also designed and deployed a static webpage to update the team on calendar events.
CCD: What are the benefits of the type of experience you had?
Joshua: Well the biggest benefit in the long term would be the coding experience. Dell-EMC also provided free intern housing, which was really nice and also created an opportunity to meet other interns from around the US. I still keep in touch with my roommates to this day. And I learned a lot; I gained GitHub experience, networking skills, and learned how to communicate with professionals. My most important lesson: your boss is there to help you. Do not be afraid to be real with them!
CCD: What’s next for you?
Joshua: I’m currently applying to graduate programs in Germany and jobs in the US. Truthfully, I think I would like the experience of working for a smaller company. This has my changed my post grad job search direction.
