Fox News College Associate
CCD: Tell us about your summer experience. What were your responsibilities?
Laura: I worked in the Northeast Bureau at Fox News in New York City, where I learned how to write and produce segments pertaining to the Northeast area. I went out into the field with producers to see how real-time news is captured. I also worked closely with producers in the office to see how to edit clips and write for television. Besides writing a script for the Fox News segment “Fox in the Classroom,” I also submitted weekly articles to the Fox News millennial newspaper, “Copy That!”
CCD: What do you think gave you an edge in securing this position?
Laura: I work as a Student Desk Assistant at the CCD. My strong connection and knowledge of the resources at BU made me a strong candidate for Fox News, as they wanted students who had relevant work experience. Since I need to always be personable, knowledgeable, and professional at the CCD, Fox News hired me, as these were characteristics they sought in a College Associate.
CCD: How has this experience changed your future plans?
Laura: Because of my experience as a College Associate, Fox News hired me as their Campus Associate at Boston University. I now work as their brand ambassador, representing the company at various promotional events I host around campus. The experience solidified my passion to become a field reporter for a major news network after college. It takes time, passion, and ton of energy to thrive in this field, but I see no challenges as this is exactly what I want to do.
CCD: What advice would you give to another student about making the most of a summer experience?
Laura: I would say to ask your supervisors lots of questions, making sure that you are understanding why they’re in their field. You can draw parallels from your experience and theirs to see how you can improve your resume. Also, be very proactive. My managers at Fox News appreciated it when I took the initiative to find work for myself to do if they didn’t have anything for me at the moment. It shows that you have initiative and drive to always be a productive staff member.
