First Generation Students: How to Find Support on Campus

Congratulations! You are the first person in your family to go to college! Undoubtedly, you have overcome many challenges along the way and are now living, studying, and exploring with your peers at Boston University.

By now you have picked up some swag from the Barnes & Noble bookstore, swiped in for a Ben & Jerry’s run at Late Night, and  “bff’ed” it up with your orientation buddy.  Life couldn’t get sweeter.

Your family has called you every week since you laid out those XL bed sheets, but you’ve been letting the calls go to voicemail (which you never check). Now, a few weeks into the semester, you are replaying their messages.

To think, a year ago, you couldn’t wait to step foot on campus, but now all you can think about is your trip home for Thanksgiving break. Life couldn’t get lonelier.

Your homework assignments are piling up. You aren’t the only academic superstar in your classes, and you are beginning to realize that maybe taking calculus your first semester wasn’t the best idea.  No one in your family has been to college, so you don’t know who to turn to with your questions and doubts. Life couldn’t get more challenging.

Luckily, you are studying at a large university that is bursting with resources. The only difficult part of gaining access is simply knowing where to turn to ask for help.

It is okay that you are no longer at the top of your class. It is okay that you miss your mom’s favorite dish. It is okay that you need help with calculating the volume of a cylinder on top of a train going 60 miles an hour.

From your academic advisor, Resident Advisor, the 50 student groups you signed up for at Splash, your professors, the Educational Resource CenterCenter for Career DevelopmentStudent Health CenterStudent Activities Office, to the person sleeping 5 feet away on the other side of your room (do you get where I am going with this?), you have so many people who want to see you succeed in all areas of your life.  So just ask. Life couldn’t get more fulfilling.
